Kes Tumbuk Guru-Siapa Yang Bersalah

0 Kes Tumbuk Guru Siapa Yang Bersalah*sekadar gambar hiasan

Wajarlah jika mereka melakukan kesalahan, mereka menerima hukuman.

Nightshift Linked To Cancer.

Don't quit your day job: Nightshift linked to cancer

It may be time to take the term "graveyard shift" literally. A new study has re-affirmed the old medical suspicion that night work can shorten your life. And before you write off this story as something that should only concern night watchmen and cab drivers, you should know that fully 20 percent of the working population of developed countries earns their living at night. As hard to believe as it sounds, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, is actually going to add night work to its list of probable carcinogens. This concern is nothing new, though. The medical suspicions about the potentially deadly side effects of night work have been around for more than a generation.

Richard Stevens, a professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center, was the first to see a link between the night shift and cancer. He developed his theory while searching for an answer as to why the incidence of breast cancer in women suddenly spiked in the 1930s, when industrialization made a round-the-clock labor force one of the hallmarks of a successful economy. Of course, many doctors and researchers thought that Professor Stevens's theory was, well ... a little nutty.

But it turns out that he was probably right. The reason? The hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a powerful ally in the body's fight against tumor development, and it's usually produced by the body at night. The theory is that night work causes such disruption in your circadian rhythm that it short-circuits melatonin development, opening the door for all manner of nasty, lethal cancers.

There are skeptics who say that the WHO's "probable carcinogen" qualification just means that the night work/cancer link is possible. But if you ask me, this newest study is merely the latest in a long line of respected research that has made the same connection. And to me, this reveals a very strong link. If you're a nine-to-fiver who's about to stop reading because you don't think this has anything to do with you, you may just want to stick around for a few more sentences...

What's true for shift workers who are awake in the middle of the night is equally true for ANYONE whose sleep is continually disrupted - including insomniacs and frequent business travelers. If you've ever said, "This jet lag is killing me," this study proves that you may be more right than you think.

If you ask me, it's more than just a melatonin deficiency at work. If you've ever done any night work, you know how unnatural and disorienting it can be. I certainly don't miss my days as a resident, when midnight-to-eight a.m. shifts were common. With the possible exception of certain teenagers, humans are simply not nocturnal animals. Your body's natural rhythms are delicate and easily disrupted, and this disruption can lead to the breakdown of critical functions. Certain bodily processes like cell division and DNA repair happen at regular times.

And anyone knows that not getting enough sleep makes your immune system vulnerable, making it just as tough for your body to do battle with potentially cancerous cells as with the common cold. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a cure-all for the night workers' potentially deadly predicament. Many of my colleagues say that it is imperative that night workers sleep in a darkened room once they get home from work to help maintain the body's light/dark balance.

I have a suggestion of my own: Don't quit your day job. Turns out it's good for you.

Diabetes: The most ignored health danger

Since I write about the dangers of diabetes so often, I suppose that I take it for granted that people see the disease as I do: as one of the greatest (and most easily avoidable) risks to your health.

Unfortunately, this is far from the case.

A new CDC survey reveals that most Americans are so clueless about the dangers of diabetes and the horrific impact it can have on their well being that many survey respondents actually ranked cancer, plane crashes and shark attack as health issues that they feared more than diabetes.

Yes: shark attacks. And no, I don't get it, either.

Understandably, cancer topped the list of dreaded health issues, but statistically people are at far greater risk of developing diabetes than cancer. While 10 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with a form of diabetes, only six percent will get cancer.

According to Ann Albright of the American Diabetes Association, the sponsor of the survey, "Our point is not that people shouldn't be concerned about cancer; we are trying to help people put things in a more accurate perspective." Here's some perspective: stop worrying about being eaten by a shark, and start worrying about what you're eating. You'll probably live longer.

Taking a bite out of diabetes,

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

KAJIAN: BILA Pompuan bawa keta ..

Women are slower and less accurate at parking than men, according to a scientific study that confirms the suspicions of many male motorists.

Female drivers take an average of 20 seconds longer to park their cars but are still less likely to end up in the middle of the bay, the research suggests.

As part of the test 65 people were asked to park an Audi A6 family saloon in a standard-sized parking space.

Their manoeuvres – including head-on, reverse and parallel parking – were timed and rated for accuracy, which was judged by how far they kept the vehicle from the edges of the bay.

While the researchers expected the women volunteers to be slower, they were surprised to find that the cautious approach did not lead to a tidier final result.

Dr Claudia Wolf from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, who led the study, said that the research confirmed previous findings that men have better co-ordination and spatial awareness than women, and take more risks behind the wheel.

"These prejudices exist and as a scientist I decided the find out if they are true or based on myth," she told the Mail on Sunday.

"I don't think that feminism or the cause of women is in any way set back by these findings. It only proves what previous studies about the spatial differences between men and women have shown.

"Besides, it is not as if there was a massive failing by women. It is just about parking – not the triumph of men over women."

World Toilet Summit - S'pore firm eyes profit from cheap US$30 toilet

SINGAPORE: Christopher Ng has a dream: Help alleviate a major global health problem by bringing toilets to the world's poor - at a tidy profit.

Ng, managing director at Singapore-based Rigel Technology, hopes to sell his state-of-the-art portable, fertilizer-making, toilets for as low as US$30 beginning next year, tapping into a multibillion dollar market for proper sanitation in developing countries.

It is among the exhibits at the annual World Toilet Summit in Singapore, which brings together industry players to generate awareness of the world's sanitation problems.

Experts estimate about 2.5 billion people lack functioning, hygienic toilets and instead excrete in the open, a habit that can contaminate water supplies and spread diseases such as E. coli bacteria and other viruses.

A prototype toilet made by Singapore-based Rigel Technology that transforms solid waste into fertilizer is on display at the World Toilet Summit Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 in Singapore. The Singapore-based World Toilet Organization, which estimates that 2.5 billion people don't have proper sanitation, seeks to facilitate private investment to make toilets and sanitation accessible in poor and rural communities. (AP Photo/Wong Maye-E)

Ng said his company's toilets separate liquid and solid waste, a feature that should reduce unpleasant smells and create fertilizer.

"A farmer could sell this recycled fertilizer," Ng said while pulling out a compartment on the bottom of a prototype.

"It's good to sell something that's useful and make a minimum profit."

Jack Sim, who founded in 2001 the nonprofit World Toilet Organization, one of the organizers of the three-day conference, estimated the market for sanitation in developing countries is worth $1 trillion.

Health advocates have sought to entice companies like Rigel to invest in affordable, portable toilets after efforts by international aid organizations and donations by rich countries fell short, he said.

Donated portable toilets would sometimes end up in storage, as the units were poorly distributed and villagers were not taught how to use and maintain them, Sim said.

"We've seen that the donor model doesn't work," Sim said.

"Now people are taking the marketplace as the solution, because it works fastest when you have a profit motive."

"Selling to the poor need not be exploitative," he said.

Sim said the World Toilet Organization will help advertise Rigel's toilets through its contacts with non-governmental organizations and humanitarian groups.

K.E. Seetharam, director of the Institute of Water Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore, estimated that just 22 percent of India's rural population and 29 percent of China's have access to working toilets.

"People aren't aware of the cost of open defecation in terms of lost work and school days from disease," Seetharam said.

He said many children in poor areas are malnourished "not because of a lack of food but because of worms in their intestines that they got from unsanitary conditions."

Rigel's Ng, who estimates poor countries need 500 million toilets, said he expects to sell 10,000 units per month beginning in February in countries such as China, India and Sri Lanka.

"The market for this is very big," Ng said. "I hope other companies will follow our lead." - AP

BID'AH?

a friend posted me this article which I find very interesting ...

What is Bid'ah?

Innovation in Islam is the invention, creation or addition of any religious matter which was not originally found in Islam. It is not innovation in general life....like the invention of cars, planes, electricity etc. For aspects of worship or ritualistic behaviors in Islam there must be something in the Quran or the Hadith to explain and confirm its practice.

Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "...and the best speech is the Speech of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the worst of all affairs are the newly invented matters (in the religion)" [Sahih Muslim]

Evidence against Bid'ah

Prophet Mohammad, (peace be upon him) says in this respect: "He who innovates something that is not in agreement with our matter (religion), will have it rejected." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Allah says in the interpretation of the meaning of the Quran that "This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion" [Noble Quran 5:3]

Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "...Verily he among you who lives [long] will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the rightly-guided Khalifahs - cling to them stubbornly. Beware of newly invented matters, for every invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going astray, and every going astray is in Hell-fire." [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]

How to identify Bid'ah

It is something that specifies doing something in a specific time, place or manner which does not have evidence to support it. For example fasting on the 15th of Sha'ban and the other rituals that go along with it. Where is the evidence?

An example of evidence for other days of fasting ...Messenger of Allah said: "Fasting on the day of 'Arafah is an expiation for two years, the year preceding it and the year following it. Fasting the day of 'Ashura is an expiation for the year preceding it." [Related by "the group," except for al-Bukhari and at-Tirmidhi]

Reasons Bid'ah exists:

1) Ignorance - The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Allah does not erase knowledge (from earth) by erasing knowledge from slaves (hearts). Rather, He erases knowledge through the death of scholars. When He leaves (earth) without scholars, people will take the ignorant as leaders (and scholars). They (the ignorant) will be asked and then give Fatawa without knowledge. Then, they will be lead, and will lead astray." [Ahmad]

2) Following desires - Allah says: "But if they answer you not O Muhammad, then know that they only follow their own lusts. And who is more astray then one who follows his own lust (desires) without the guidance from Allah" [Noble Quran 28:50]

"Have you seen him who takes his own desires as his god, and Allah knowing (him as such) left him astray, sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after Allah." [Noble Quran 45:23]

3) Blind Following - Allah said what translated means:

"Follow what Allah has sent down." They say: "Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following. Even though their fathers did not understand anything, nor were they guided." [Noble Quran 2:170]

4) Imitating the disbelievers - Adopting their celebrations and practices. An example in the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) when the companions asked him to give them an "Anwar Tree" and Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Allahu Akbar! It is the Sunan (traditions of the Mushrikun). You said by He Who has my soul in His Hand, what the children of Israel said to Moses: "Make for us gods as they have gods. He said: 'Verily! You are a people who know not." [7:138] and he (peace be upon him) said: You will follow the traditions of those before you (Jews and Christians)" [at-Tirmidhi]

Dangers of Bid'ah:

1) Thinking you are getting closer to Allah - Allah accepts the actions of those who make their intentions for Him alone and according to His ways.
Shaytan loves Bid'ah because people rarely repent from it thinking they are on the right path getting closer to Allah.

2) Dividing the Ummah - Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

"...my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect. They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, which is that? Whereupon he said: It is one to which I and my companions belong." [At- Tirmidhi]

A Muslim of the Sunnah will be forced to stay away from the practice of Bid'ah and will therefore be separated from other Muslims

3) Destruction of the Sunnah - Ibn Abbas said, "When Bid'ah is created then the Sunnah dies and this continues until that Bid'ah is living and the Sunnah is dead."

And also, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Islam began as something strange, and it shall return as something strange as it began. So give glad tidings to the strangers." It was asked, "Who are the strangers?" He replied, "Those that purify and correct what the people have corrupted of my Sunnah" [at-Tabarani]

This corruption is Bid'ah, where people have changed the religion of Allah until the Sunnah has become corrupted.

4) Committing Shirk - An example from one Muslim country when they lay the foundation of a new house they put up a flag pole and raise a piece of cloth like a scarf or something to protect the house from the evil eye during the time it is being built. Some even place a tire (yes a car tire) on the pole to protect them. They also dip their hand in henna and make a hand print with the henna on the new walls of the house to protect it from the evil eye. This is Shirk!!

5) Damaging the image of Islam - For the Ummah as a whole, Bid'ah hurts the spreading of Islam and Dawah for the sake of Allah. Honour killings (the killing of a daughter for committing fornication) is an example. There is nothing in Islam that allows a family to execute the Islamic Shari'ah their own way. There is a process for dealing with adultery, and for the unmarried person it is in fact 100 lashings, not death. People, ignorant of Islam believe that this is how our religion is and those guilty of this form of Bid'ah, in fact guilty of one of the worst of major sins, taking the life of a Muslim, are harming the way the non Muslims view Islam.

6) Bid'ah is the cause of Fitnah or severe punishment for this Ummah - As Allah says: "For those people who are differing from the commands of Prophet, there will come to them either a Fitnah (test or trial from Allah) or a severe punishment." [Noble Quran 24:63]

And you can look in the Muslim countries where Bid'ah is rampant.

- Celebrating the Prophet's Birthday
- Reading Quran for the dead e.g. Chapter Yasin or celebrate 40 days after a person's died
- Putting head stones or monuments over the grave
- Asking the dead to make Du'a for them or relay the message to Allah

7) Bid'ah is a stepping stone to disbelief - Allah says:

"The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray." [Noble Quran 1:7]

This verse refers to the Christians and the Jews. They introduced new laws into the religion and this took them away from the true message of the Prophets Musa and Issa (peace be upon them). They took to rulings of their priests and rabbis over the words of Allah and his Messengers.

8) Individually, Bid'ah destroys the Hereafter of the person - Narrated Ayshah: Allah's Apostle said, "If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected."

9) May lead to lying on Allah and His messenger - The Prophet said:

"Whoever knowingly lie upon me, then let him occupy his seat in the Fire (of Hell)". [Bukhari, Muslim & others]

People will twist or fabricate Hadiths or references from the Quran in order to justify their actions. This is known to be one of the things that can take you out of Islam!!

Conclusion

- Allah says in the Quran: "This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion" [Noble Quran 5:4]

- Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"I have left behind me two things, if you cling to them you will never go astray. They are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah" [al-Hakim]

and

"...so cling to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me, even if it be with your teeth" [Bukhari]

THE TASTE OF LIFE

An experienced & wise master grew tired of his apprentice complaining. One morning he sent the apprentice for some salt.

When the apprentice returned, the master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and drink it.

"How does it taste?" the master asked.

"Bitter," spit the apprentice.

The master chuckled and then asked the young man to put a handful of Salt in the lake nearby.

The two walked to the nearby lake. After the apprentice swirled his handful of salt into the water, the old man said, "Now drink from the lake.."

As the water dripped down the young man's chin, the master asked, "Now How does this taste?"

"Fresh & Sweet" remarked the apprentice.

"Do you taste the salt?" asked the master.

"No," said the young man.

At this, the master sat beside the young man who so reminded him of himself at one time and held his hands.

He told the young man, "The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less.

The amount of pain in life remains exactly the same. However, the amount of bitterness we taste depends on the container we put the pain in.

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Whenever Allaah intends to do good to a servant, He hastens to punish him in this world.. And whenever Allaah intends evil for a servant, He postpones the punishment until the Day of Judgement." [26]

His saying, "Whenever Allaah intends to do good to a servant, He hastens to punish him in this world." means: that he is punished by being inflicted with afflictions and difficulties due to the sins he has committed, due to which he is cleansed from them all, and in the Hereafter he has no sins to account for

26] Saheeh: Related by at-Tirmidhee (no. 2398) and al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak (1/340), from Anas (radiyallaahu 'anhu). It was authenticated by Shaykh al-Albaanee in as-Saheehah (no. 1220).

So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things . . .

We should stop containing our pain in a glass and start containing them in a lake Insha-Allah =)

Certainly we have destined many JINNS and HUMAN BEINGS for hell; those are the ones who have hearts with which they do not understand; they have eyes with which they do not see; they have ears with which they do not hear; THEY ARE LIKE ANIMALS - OR EVEN WORSE THAN THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE THOSE WHO ARE HEEDLESS AL-A'RAF 179

More than half of office workers use sites like Twitter and Facebook for personal use during the working day, and admit wasting an average of 40 minutes a week each.

One in three of the 1,460 office workers surveyed also said they had seen sensitive company information posted on social networking sites, leading to fears about how workers use the internet.

Philip Wicks, consultant at Morse, the IT services and technology company who commissioned the survey, said the true cost to the economy could be substantially higher than the £1.38bn estimate.

"When someone is asked for their own use they say around 40 minutes a week, but when asked about their colleagues they say they say up to an hour a day. We have used the lower of those figures rather than the high point," he said.

"It is the sort of thing people constantly use which means that its not quite the same as doing a crossword, where you spend half an hour on it and it is finished.

"When it comes to an office environment the use of these sites is clearly becoming a productivity black hole.

"Social networking can be a cause for good when it is used professionally but I think organisations need to wake up – that is not the way it is always being used."

David Clubb, managing director of Office Angels, the recruitment firm, added: "As younger generations join the workplace, I believe UK businesses will, inevitably, have to embrace social networks, recognising the benefits of providing staff with well deserved downtime, but also their potential for business networking."

Three quarters of the office workers surveyed said their employer had not given them any specific guidelines on how to use Twitter, but 84 per cent believed it should be up to them what they post online.

Last month staff at PC World and Currys were found to have posted offensive comments about customers on Facebook groups.

Some posters who said they were employed by the shops' parent company, DSG, said some customers deserved to be punched, and asked if they should be allowed to "cattle prod" them.

British Airways staff used Facebook to complain about customers' "stupid American accents" last year, while Virgin Atlantic employees referred to some passengers as "chavs".

· What Morse really mean is "YOU. WAGE SLAVE. WORK HARDER." because that's what they think their client wants to hear.

What about time-wasting tasks resulting from the usual piss-poor management that we see in this country? Reading dreary 50-page documents that could say the same thing in two? Dull, endless meetings listening to some idiot manager droning on, loving the sound of his or her own voice?

Or how about looking into the increased productivity of a workforce who know that they're respected enough to spend a bit of time on networking, spend a few minutes relaxing every now and then but whose vastly increased morale means that the company gets more done? Give a little respect, take a whole lot more productive work. If you do this, you end up with people who don't have to be told to pick up email at the weekend - they just do it anyway.

If you ban access to these sites, you really are telling people that they're just slaves. Put fances around people and you get sheep.

But of course Morse just create the usual lazy, superficial report that we'd expect from a bunch of muppets like them.

· I'm a company owner (Economy-x-Talk) and social networking on and off-line is essential.

The company is still small and I work with freelancers. When I hire my first employee, familiarity with social network sites will be a requirement.

Are we going forward, or do we need to think backwards?

What is the benefit of responding to company's email on a sundayevening? Making an appointment while in the train? Working on a groupdocument in the evening? Making a conferencecall instead of travelling around the world?

Wake up, this is the 21th century! Don't argue with late 80's arguments.

However, we could read this as an appeal to professionalism... but why use new technology as a leverage to that?

· Social Media sites are being harnessed by leaders in marketing around the world as a way of communicating with customers and social groups.

Can't help thinking that the plonkers at Morse really thought they had scored a success by getting this "press" into a national daily MSM with their name on it.

Learning to work with & manage these tools & services could greatly enhance most businesses communication & motivation.

They could just allow their staff to twitter as long as they do a bit of tweeting on their company sites too... makes a big difference to all those guys... 40 Minutes per week is not really lost time. If it was 40 minute a day then we have trouble

· People will always have ways of accessing the things you ban.

But honestly, though, in an ideal world people work 100% of the time. In our world? It's the norm that people goof off, and by removing something you won't change that.

Block twitter? People will use facebook. Block facebook? People will use myspace. Block myspace? People will circumvent the blocking software. I mean, even if there was a way to truly block a website, people would just go back to talking to each other in the office, throwing paper balls into bins and sitting at their desks doing nothing at all.

· And what, pray tell are Morse offering as the 'solution' to the social media devil? Could it possibly be a pricey internet filtering suite? Hmm?

You could just as easily replace 'Twitter, Facebook' in the headline with 'Gossiping with workmates' or 'Staring out of the window'.

Social media is not some kind of devil that will destroy worker's productivity if we don't crush it - it's a management issue, not a technical issue, and filtering it out of existence so organisations can't gain from its positive business benefits is, at best naive and at worst, downright stupid.

· 40 minutes per week? And the rest! I'd not be surprised to learn that people are only actually working 40 minutes a day, and spending the rest of the time blogging, tweeting, facebooking and YouTubing. The fact is that traffic on all social networking and sharing sites drops off a cliff at the weekend, and there are so many of these sites that it's a full-time job just keeping up with them.

Once you've read all the online newspapers, read all your friends' updates, posted your own, caught up with iPlayer and read the latest lolcats, it's time for lunch, isn't it?

· How long do these so-called business leaders think workers spend texting people on their mobile phones during offices hours? Ban SMS and they will telephone.

One might ask why the Government has spent tens of millions of pounds giving all public sector workers Internet access?

Could it be to stop them getting bored?

KISAH BAWANG PUTIH BAWANG MERAH ...

Pernah dengar dan pernah makan garlic pearls? ... apa lagi kalau bawang dgn satey ... atau bawang dlm masakan laksa, korma dan sebagai nya

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu.

Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work.

(And no, she is not in the onion business.)

The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better. If you do get the flu, it just might be a mild case.

Whatever, what have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Weldon, thanks for the reminder.

I don't know about the farmers story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill...I came across an article that said
to cut both ends off an onion put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

Lupakan harta yang di sedekahkan

Satu teladan ...

How to see .. the haze so thick & choking!!!

Malaysians can observe meteor shower tonight

By K. KASTURI DEWI

kasturidewi@thestar.com.my

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysians will be able to sight up to a total of 100 Perseid meteors per hour streaking across the northern sky in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Universiti Sains Malaysia's Astronomy Atmospheric Science Unit lecturer Assoc Prof Dr Chong Hon Yew said that according to the International Meteor Organisation (IMO). the meteor shower is expected to be best viewed from 1.30am to 4am on Thursday.

"The shower could have started on July 24 and is expected to be observed until Aug 17.

"It is however predicted that during the peak viewing time (Thursday morning), the moon will be high in the sky, outshining the fainter meteors.

"There is a good chance for observers to spot the brighter meteors however," he said on Wednesday.

Dr Chong also hoped the weather would be favourable for the Perseids to be seen.

Those who miss tomorrow's meteor shower may still catch a "lesser version" after midnight Thursday, or early Friday morning.

Dr Chong said the Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle which are usually fast, bright and occasionally leave persistent trains.

"The point they come from lies in the constellation of Perseus," he said.

The Perseid meteor shower has been observed for about 2,000 years, with the first known sighting coming from the Far East.

Every year in August, the Earth passes through rock and dust fragments left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle. As these small particles collide with the Earth's atmosphere, they burn up, often creating a startling streak of light across the sky.

The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the greatest activity between Aug 8 and Aug 14, peaking at about Aug 12.

Dr Chong said the meteor shower can be observed with the naked eye (those wearing glasses may not use them to see the meteors .. ahakkzzzz)
